3rd November 2023
Classic car ownership is less than straightforward. Some of us ended up with our pride and joy through chance, others after a long hunt for the perfect example and some always knew that one day she would be ours. Whatever your story, it’s probable that there’s emotion involved and you want the very best for her or them.
Winter will soon be upon us again and many will be looking back at 2023 with a tinge of regret. It’s not been a great year, the weather was not the best for classic motoring and the current cost of living increases probably mean that you didn’t get as much use out of your classic or vintage transport as you should.
So, it’s time to add some protection to help her through the dark days, freezing nights and unending damp until springtime dawns and we can look forward to a better year next year. Time to get out those old sheets and blankets in the garage and cover up except that would be a very bad plan....
Let’s imagine that your classic is garaged in an unheated building built of brick. I had one of those many years ago and was astonished to find the car soaking wet from the windows down to the garage floor. I had parked the car in a dry garage with nice shiny chrome bumpers and sparkling paintwork a couple of months previously and now it was a mess. Debris from the garage roof had dropped on the paint and my hours of cleaning and preparation for storage had been in vain. The air bricks for ventilation in the garage wall had become blocked and my cherished car sat for weeks covered in condensation. The only thing that would have made it worse would be old sheets and blankets. These willingly absorb damp and moisture and then hold it against the paintwork and chrome causing untold damage.
Well designed car covers are made from breathable materials that will not damage your car and that resist mould and moisture, keeping them away from the bodywork. Here at Coverzone we want to help you with vehicle protection for years to come and our indoor covers will last indefinitely. Our covers, whether indoors or outdoors will provide the protection your classic car needs from all weather conditions.
Older cars didn’t have the same corrosion protection or technology as modern vehicles. In fact it was not unusual for seven year old models to have large rust patches and holes in their floors! The quality of steel and rust proofing methods makes them more vulnerable to extreme changes of environmental elements and temperature variation.
Here are five reasons why covering your classic with a quality, purpose made cover is essential:
PROTECTION FROM RUST AND CORROSION
Rust and corrosion can be a huge problem on all kinds of vehicle, but particularly on classics as they lack modern anti-corrosion treatments and often have mud traps on the underside where salty road dirt can accumulate. A quality cover will keep moisture away from the whole car and help prevent rusting over time. Make sure that you thoroughly hose away any muddy deposits from the car underside before long term storage.
PREVENT PAINT AND INTERIOR FADE
UV rays can cause paintwork and interior trim to fade over time so having an effective barrier will keep that just restored look for much, much longer. Always remember to slightly crack your windows open prior to fitting the cover which will help to prevent mildew forming inside the car.
KEEP DIRT OUT
You should ideally store your car after a thorough clean and polish. This will remove pollutants, bird lime and general debris that can cause damage and will add a layer of protection to the paint. Even new, dry garages will allow dust and gritty deposits to build up over the months but using a breathable fabric cover keeps dust off while still allowing air flow through. After winter you will reveal your highly polished, treasured vehicle and will not need to do any additional cleaning.
AVOID ACCIDENTAL SCRATCHES AND DINGS
Your car is precious and probably irreplaceable. However, other people may not be so careful around her. We often hear stories about kids bikes being leant against old cars, the neighbours having building work done and partners opening their car door onto your newly painted door skin! Did you know that we can add padded buffers to the inside of any of our car covers? Also animal damage to cars is on the increase with foxes causing nasty scratches and even chewing brake lines. Keeping your pride & joy covered up helps avoid nasty marks marring the exterior beauty permanently which could be costly and time consuming to repair.
SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN
Your investment in a quality tailored cover will repay you over the years by saving valuable time and by reducing your long term repair costs due to neglect. Get into the habit of covering up regularly when parked outside etc. as this alone will make a difference and your classic will continue to increase in value.
